SHILLONG, April 13 - An angry mob pelted stones on cars and buses bearing Meghalaya registration number at Byrnihat last night in which Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy escaped unhurt when his car was also attacked.

At least 20 vehicles were attacked and in the stone pelting some passengers were injured. Two night super buses from Tura were damaged in the incident.

The police said that the damages were minor with windshield and door glasses of vehicles being damaged. The injuries of the persons were also not life threatening.

Roy who was travelling on the Highway was caught in the attack and his car was damaged, but he escaped unhurt.

The stone pelting was reportedly a retaliation to a vehicle knocking down a pedestrian a few days back, when vehicles were taking the wrong lane due to the ongoing construction work near the weigh bridge in the area.

According to police, the incident took place at around 9 pm and was so sudden that police and CRPF forces stationed near the weigh bridge were caught unaware.

FIRs have been registered at Byrnihat police station against unknown persons and the injured were provided preliminary treatment. Adequate forces have been deployed in the area and the situation is under control, police said.
