SHILLONG, Oct 12 Meghalaya Government has decided to release 40 per cent arrears of agitating deficit school teachers within the next 60- odd days. However, the teachers want the assurance in black and white.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who also holds the Finance portfolio, informed this evening that the decision to release the arrears, running up to Rs 60 crore, was taken after careful analysis of the States financial position. But, the school teachers want the assurance in writing, so that the government doesnt go back on its words.

The deficit school teachers are on an indefinite strike for the past six days. Several schools have been struggling to carry on normal classes and instead shut down giving advanced Puja vacation.

The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association president, ED Nongsiang said a decision to call off their strike would be taken after receiving the governments assurance in black and white . Sangma on the other hand has asked the Education department to intimate the decision to the school managements, expressing hope for an end to the agitation.

Not just the school teachers, State Government employees would also get their 30 per cent arrears before Christmas.
