JORHAT, March 22 � Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita today said here that any member of the Congress may be expelled for dissident activities and causing harm to the party. Kalita termed Mani Kumar Subba an Independent candidate after the latter filed his nomination papers for the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency on Friday after failing to get a Congress ticket for the ensuing Parliamentary polls.
Along with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Avinash Pandey, Kalita attended an election campaign meeting here for the Congress nominee for the Jorhat HPC, BK Handique, on Saturday.
In reply to a question on Subba�s current activities, Kalita told reporters that any rebel may not only be suspended, but also expelled for six years. However, he refrained from saying whether the party high command was initiating any action against Subba for his reported comments against the Congress candidate for the Tezpur HPC, Bhupen Bora.
Defending his position, former Congress MP Subba claimed that he would contest the Lok Sabha polls as an Independent candidate to defeat the BJP in Tezpur.
