GUWAHATI, March 31 � The Brihattar Rani Anchalik Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Samity has asked the State government to give capital punishment to the Rani Tea Estate owner Mridul Kumar Bhattacharya who allegedly shot dead a school student Pradip Murari following a tiff over using a tea garden road by NREGA workers.
At a recent public meeting organised by the Samity, which consists of various local organisations, local student bodies etc., it was said that the unfortunate incident should be taken seriously by the government and the rights of common people should be protected, a press release mentioned.
The Samity had already submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on March 25, asking for suitable punishment to Bhattacharya.
�State Agriculture Minister Pramila Rani Brahma visited the place but no official announcement was made on that day. Though the police arrested Mridul Bhattacharya, the local people and victims are not sure whether he would get suitable punishment. We request all the public organisations, political parties etc, to support us in our mission,� the release mentioned.
The Samity also demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 10 lakh each to the injured persons and sealing the tea garden till investigation is on.
�The government should also take steps to free the encroached land from the tea garden management. Moreover adequate open space should be made available in the area for the common people to commute,� it further added.
