BJP leader arrested for assaulting cop in Tinsukia

Doomdooma, Feb 27: BJP leader Dipanjali Kakoti was arrested by the police today for allegedly assaulting a personnel of Kakopothar police station in November last year.

The BJP leader allegedly physically assaulted a police officer inside the Kakopathar police station on November 8 last year after the police officer refused to set free a culprit who was brought in for questioning.

Dipanjali Kakoty, an executive member of State BJP and resident of Dirak Powai, engaged in altercation with sub-inspector Aupurba Das over the release of her driver Srikanta Phukan who was picked up by the police in connection with assault on a woman. She allegedly attempted to take out Phukan from the police station. When SI Das prevented her from doing so, she pushed him aside and allegedly assaulted Das.

A case was registered against Dipanjali Kakoty U/S 294/448/332/427 IPC.  Soon after the incident, the State BJP suspended Dipanjali Kakoti from the party. But she was later included as a member in the recently constituted Moran Autonomous Council by the state government.

Kakoty was taken to Tinsukia Sadar police station where she was interrogated by the police.
