Titabor student dies after alleged denial of exit for treatment; protests erupt
Family claims in-charge dismissed illness as pretence, delayed exit until pressure mounted from fellow students on campus
Students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Titabor staged protests outside the campus, demanding a thorough investigation
Jorhat, Apr 11: The death of a student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Titabor on Saturday triggered protests on campus, with fellow students demanding accountability from the authorities.
According to reports, the student, Moni Madhab, had been unwell for some time. His father had reportedly visited the school to take him home for medical treatment, but was allegedly not permitted to do so.
“He was suffering from fever, and the school nurse provided medicines, but his temperature did not subside even after taking them,” a relative said.
The student had reportedly been ill since January. As his condition worsened, the school authorities eventually informed the family.
“However, when his health started deteriorating, the housemaster informed the guardians, but the in-charge did not allow the student to leave without the principal’s permission, as the principal was not present at the time. The in-charge even claimed that the student was pretending,” the relative alleged.
It was only after repeated requests from fellow students that the school administration allowed him to leave, the family claimed.
Despite being taken for medical treatment, the student later died in Dhemaji.
Following the incident, students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Titabor staged protests inside the campus, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the death.
“I want a proper investigation into the matter. If a similar incident happens again, who will take responsibility? This is not the first time, there was a similar case earlier where a girl also died,” the relative added.
Meanwhile, school authorities and the Titabor sub-divisional administration reportedly restricted media access to the campus.
This is a developing story and more details are awaited.
