Police rescue 10 children victims from Arunachal; 2 arrested

Guwahati, April 5: The Assam Police with the support of Arunachal Pradesh Police rescued as many as 10 victims of child trafficking from the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, Assam police launched an operation and rescued the children and also arrested two accused in connection with the incident. One of the accused confessed their alleged involvement in this child trafficking case during interrogation.

The accused were identified as Deep Jyoti Gogoi, a resident of Lakhimpur district and Dipak Karmakar alias Guddu, a resident of Luhali Basti under Doomdooma police station of Tinsukia.

Reportedly, 11 children, including 7 boys and 4 girls hailing from Lohari basti in Talap and Khobang Tea Estate, were lured with the promise of good life and employment at Silapathar in Assam. But, the accused took the victims Taksing basti in Arunachal Pradesh, where they were pressed into domestic work.

The victims were also subjected to mental and physical torture and refrained from contacting their family members.

According to police, the mission was launched on March 31 and after a 72-hour-long operation they finally succeeded in rescuing 10 victims out of 11 as one girl had fled away before police could track them.
