Palasbari, Sept 17: A violent midnight attack incident rocked the No. 1 Balasidhi Majpara village under Chhaygaon LAC in South Kamrup when a group of around 15 armed miscreants stormed into the village, creating panic among the residents on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses said a gang of around 15 miscreants, armed with sticks, stormed the house of local youth Jayanta Das. Failing to find him at home, they allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife, Juri Das, and smashed windows, flower pots and furniture. The gang later attacked shopkeeper Apurba Thakuria, leaving him seriously injured. At least three people, including the pregnant woman, were badly hurt.

The villagers rushed the injured to Chhaygaon police station, where medical examinations were arranged. Police detained one youth, Tapan Kalita, but several prime accused remain absconding. The FIR has named Tapan Das, FK Ali, Dildar Hussain, Raju Ali, Champion and Shankar Das as involved in the attack. The locals alleged that the gang also brought two female members.

On Monday, hundreds of residents rallied in protest, surrounding the Chhaygaon police station and blasting the authorities with slogans that branded the force as ‘silent spectators to crime’. Demonstrators shouted that the police had ‘betrayed public trust’ and demanded swift arrests.

Several villagers further alleged that multiple complaints have earlier been ignored under the current Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chhaygaon police station Kamakhya Mishra. It is worth mentioning that during the tenure of former OC Bhaskar Malla Patowary, such incidents of organized crime and mob attacks were never reported in the area.

Talking to this correspondent, villagers warned that if the police fail to arrest the main accused within three days, they will mobilize more than a thousand people to stage an even larger protest in front of Chhaygaon police station.

Village president Prafulla Medhi, who led the meeting, also appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to personally intervene and ensure justice.
