Guwahati, Jan 19: A First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged after a forged letter, falsely attributed to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, surfaced on social media, prompting authorities to launch a priority investigation.

In a post on social media, Sonowal said it had come to his notice that miscreants were circulating a fabricated letter bearing his name, official letterhead and a forged signature, allegedly with malafide intent.

“An FIR has been lodged in this matter, and law enforcement agencies have been requested to investigate the case on priority and take strict legal action against those responsible,” the Union Minister said.

Sonowal categorically rejected the contents of the letter, describing it as entirely false and fabricated.

The forged letter purported to assess the political and administrative situation in Assam and claimed that there was widespread public dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state government.

It cited alleged governance failures, corruption, law and order issues, unemployment, price rise and misuse of power as reasons for what it described as growing public anger at the grassroots level.

“There is a widespread dissatisfaction among the people regarding the functioning of the present state government. Issues related to governance, corruption, law and order, unemployment, price rise and misuse of power have led to unprecedented anger at the grassroots levels,” the forged document stated.

Sonowal’s office has firmly dismissed all such claims, reiterating that the document is fake, forged and has no connection whatsoever with the Union Minister or his official communications.

Earlier in the day, the office of the Union Minister lodged a formal complaint at the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi, seeking legal action against those involved in creating and circulating the forged letter.
