Cachar: 2 suspected Burmese supari smuggler held

Silchar, Dec 10: In a sensational development, Assam Police apprehended two persons from the Gumrah area of Katigorah under Assam’s Cachar district who are allegedly involved in the illegal trade of Burmese betelnuts through the district.

The suspected smugglers have been identified as Zabir Hussain and Jasim Uddin.

Cachar Additional SP (Headquarters) Subrata Sen informed that on Saturday, based on secret inputs a vehicle carrying Burmese areca nuts was intercepted along the Meghalaya border. During interrogation, and the statement of the driver of the vehicle, a person named Zabir Hussain (29) was arrested. Later on, Hussain was taken to hospital for medical examination.

"While being taken to Kalain CHC, Kalain for treatment, he urged to stop the vehicle for answering the nature's call on the roadside at Korosura under the jurisdiction of Kalain Police Station. During that time, all of a sudden, he hit one on duty UBC 1032 Giridhar Das and fled away taking the cover of darkness and forest in the area. He was cautioned over and again by the accompanied police staff to stop but he did not pay any heed and started running towards the open field. Finding no other alternative, the on duty officer SI Dipjyoti Barua initially opened a blank fire and then was compelled to open controlled fire targeting the fleeing accused below his knees. As a result of which the said Zabir Hussain sustained a bullet injury and fell down and was recaptured by the police team without any delay. Both accused Zabir Hussain and the injured constable were immediately taken to the Kalain CHC, Kalain from where they were referred to the SMCH, Silchar for further treatment," the Additional SP told The Assam Tribune.
