Assembly polls: Assam's longest serving woman MLA loses

Guwahati, May 2: Assam's longest serving woman legislator and Cabinet minister in the outgoing government, Pramila Rani Brahma, lost the election to the Assam Legislative Assembly today.


Brahma had been representing the Kokrajhar (East) constituency in the state Assembly since 1991, elected as an Independent for the first time.


She went on to retain the seat for next five terms, initially as an Independent candidate and then, as the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) nominee. She had served as Cabinet ministers in a Congress-led government as well as the outgoing BJP-led government in the state.


Among the most influential woman politicians of the state, Brahma (70) lost to 44-year-old Lawrence Islary of the United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL).
