Guwahati, Sept 17: Arrested ACS officer Nupur Borah has amassed around 400 per cent more properties than her actual source of income, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
Talking to the media, Sarma said that around six months ago, the civil servant had transferred some land of Barpeta Satra to other people violating rules. She was immediately transferred from Barpeta after the incident and since then, she is under the scanner of the investigating agency.
As per law, no outsiders can transfer land located within a radius of 5 kms from the iconic heritage institutions that are at least 250 years old, including Batadrawa Than, Barpeta Satra, etc.
But the arrested government official had violated the norm, while she was serving as circle officer in Barpeta district.
Police also arrested one Surajit Deka, a lat mandal, from Barpeta in connection with the case. He was allegedly working as a collection agent of the arrested official. Today, the Chief Minister noted that a number of lat mandals will also face police question in the same case.
Meanwhile, SP of CM’s Special Vigilance Cell Rosie Kalita said that the cash amount of Rs 92,50,400, which was recovered from the possession of the ACS officer, is the biggest-ever cash recovery by the investigating agency.
The cash amount was recovered during two simultaneous search operations conducted by the investigating agency in Barpeta and Guwahati in the last 24 hours.
Police recovered the cash from her flat in Guwahati and the rented house in Barpeta. Although she was transferred, Nupur Borah still rented a house in Barpeta, from where police recovered huge amount of cash.
During preliminary investigation, police found two plots of land owned by the civil servant in Beltola and Jalukbari areas, along with three flats in the city. She also purchased some properties jointly with family members and others.
The market value of the gold and diamond-studded ornaments recovered from her possession will be around Rs 1.5 crore, police said.
Investigation also revealed that Nupur Borah had taken around Rs 9.5 lakh as bribe from different people through online mode in recent times.
Rosie Kalita stated that many people from the areas, where Nupur Borah had served earlier as an ACS officer, approached the investigating agency to record statements before the court against the arrested bureaucrat.
She also noted that a number of corrupt ACS officers, particularly circle officers, are under scanner of the investigating agency.
Meanwhile, a court today remanded both the accused into three days police custody.
