8 illegal timber trucks seized in Ri-Bhoi dist

TURA, Jan 20 - Meghalaya police yesterday seized a huge quantity of illegal sawn timber, worth lakhs of rupees, from Byrnihat under Ri-Bhoi district. The illegal timber in eight trucks was bound for neighbouring Assam.

According to acting Superintendent of Police, JFK Marak, police had received information from sources about the movement of the timber in eight Assam registered trucks. �The timber trucks were detained at our Byrnihat Outpost without any documents,� said Marak. The timber, concealed with plastic and polythene sheets, is believed to have originated from East and West Khasi Hills districts.

Police informed that on questioning it was found that the sawn pine timber were being sent to Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Hojai, Dhubri and Sonitpur in Assam where there is a huge demand.
