45 taken ill after consuming pithas

DIBRUGARH, Oct 11 � At least 45 people including eight minors were taken ill today reportedly after consuming pithas during a ritualistic function held at one Vishnu Gogoi�s house at Rajabari Bhattichuk near Chabua town. Twenty-two were rushed to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) this morning while 17 were admitted in St Luke�s Hospital, Chabua, Reena Mech, Circle Officer, informed.

The Circle Officer said that the ritualistic function was held yesterday but none complained of any trouble yesterday. �Some of the affected persons had eaten pithas this morning,� she said. However, no one is said to be in critical condition. �None of them is in serious conditions,� Dr Nripen Gogoi, Superintendent of Assam Medical College and Hospital told this newspaper. The pithas those were served were reportedly fermented and stale. All those admitted in St Luke�s Hospital were discharged while 13 are still undergoing treatment at AMCH.
