297 water supply schemes in State out of order

BARPETA Feb 14 � As many as 297 water supply schemes in the State are out of order as of date. This was revealed by Minister of Public Health Engineering Sukur Ali Ahmed today.

Talking to mediapersons here, Ahmed said in spite of the best efforts of the government the schemes set up by his department have remained defunct due to one reason or the other. He added that an amount of Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned to revive the schemes.

Regarding presence of arsenic in drinking water, Ahmed said water in 20 districts of the State is contaminated with arsenic. Acknowledging that arsenic contamination is very dangerous, he said the government would try its best to supply safe drinking water to the people.

The minister was here to attend a zonal level review meeting of his department where the Chief Engineer, the Additional Chief Engineer, the superintending engineers and the executive engineers of Lower Assam were present.
