By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 21 - The Dr Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Trust is organising the Thirteenth Dr Amitabh Chowdhury Annual Memorial Lecture on December 19 at 5 pm at the Rabindra Bhawan here. The lecture will be delivered by noted astrophysicist and monk Swami Atmapriyananda, Vice Chancellor Ramkrishna Mission Vivekananda University. He will speak on the topic Science and religion shall meet and shake hands.

The commemorative lecture is organised annually to celebrate the birthday Dr Amitabh Chowdhury, a product of the Gauhati Medical College Hospital, who had obtained his super specialisation (MCh) in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur. He then joined the Southern Railways Headquarter Hospital in Chennai. While in the process of emerging as a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, Amitabh met with a fatal road mishap on September 10, 2003, and his journey of life ended there at the age of 33.

The memorial trust was constituted in 2003 to keep alive the humanitarian spirit that Amitabh espoused. It has renovated and refurbished the Gauhati Medical College Library with latest books and journals of medical science. On March 14, 2014, the Dr Amitabh Chowdhury Memorial Library was shifted to the main auditorium and was upgraded into an e-library.

In its endeavour to reach out to the marginalised class of society, the memorial trust, in association with Janus Initiatives Kerala, and the Institute of Child Health and Mothers Care, Guwahati, also organised a free cardiac camp in Guwahati on May 31, 2015.

To commemorate the birthday of Dr Chowdhury, the trust initiated a lecture series in 2004, in order to stimulate and nurture human unity, apart from raising awareness on various social issues in contemporaneous living, said a press release.
