GUWAHATI, July 31 - BJP legislator from Sonai constituency Aminul Haque Laskar was today elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Laskar, the only Muslim MLA of the ruling BJP, was the lone candidate for the post and he was elected unopposed.
Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami declared Laskar elected during today�s session of the House.
After the announcement, senior leaders, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other ministers as well as MLAs belonging to both the treasury benches and the Opposition, escorted Laskar to his chair, amidst thumping of desk.
Extending his felicitations, Goswami exuded confidence that the newly elected Deputy Speaker will fulfil his role and responsibilities with dedication, and by taking into confidence everyone in the House.
Congratulating the new Deputy Speaker on his election, Sonowal thanked all the MLAs for extending support to Laskar.
The Chief Minister said that Laskar has over the years, in his role as a senior leader of the AASU and later as member of the AGP and then the BJP, served the people with honesty and dedication. Sonowal asked Laskar to be neutral and unbiased while discharging his responsibilities as the Deputy Speaker.
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said he and members of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) are happy at Laskar�s elevation to the post of Deputy Speaker and assured all cooperation in the running of the House.
