GUWAHATI, Sept 17 - An altercation that took place at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) this morning claimed the life of one Chandan Dhar from Basistha area, even as police arrested one Islim Ali, a resident of Manikpur area in Bongaigaon district, in connection with the incident.
According to Himangshu Das, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dispur), both the accused and victim were attendants of patients. Newborn babies of both of them are under treatment at the GMCH.
�This morning Chandan fainted and accidentally fell on the wife of Islim. When Islim came to know about it, he rushed to the spot and attacked Chandan. Chandan sustained severe internal injury and breathed his last,� Das said.
The incident has raised a big question mark over the security system in place at the GMCH. According to sources, at present altogether 100 home guard personnel have been deployed by the hospital authority in and around the hospital. But no security person was present today to stop the altercation.
ACP Das resented that even though around 40 people were present at the spot when the fight was going on, no one came forward to stop it.
