Alleged rapist cop surrenders before court

By Raju Das

SHILLONG, June 24 Fugitive Meghalaya cop, Nurul Islam today surrendered before the Session Court this evening, under direction from the High Court, and was granted bail with sufficient surety.

Krishna Sunar, Islams Counsel said, his client was produced before the Session Court and as the bail was granted by the judge, he can walk free as of now.

But what was interesting is Islams son, Nawaz Islam claiming his father has been appearing before the District Court and also the Meghalaya High Court three months after the FIR was filed in June 2013. The State Government has all this while claimed ignorance about Islams whereabouts and declared him an absconder.

He was not absconding. He has appeared before the Court regularly, Islams son claimed, adding, he must have appeared before the Courts at least six to seven times here in the State Capital.

The sub-inspector from Ampati, in South West Garo Hills allegedly raped two sisters inside the police station at gunpoint. He continued to rape the sisters, allegedly, at their home too.

After an FIR was filed, the State Government declared Islam as an absconder and claimed they didnt know about his whereabouts. Nawaz, meanwhile, said the allegations against his father are baseless.
