All-party team may meet PM on ST status

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 21 - The Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly Ranjit Dass today asked all the legislative party leaders to unanimously take a call on meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the long-pending issue of granting ST status to six indigenous groups of Assam.

Replying to the proposal of AGP legislator Phani Bhusan Choudhury to constitute an all-party delegation under the leadership of the Speaker of the House himself, Forest and Environment Minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that she has no objection if an all-party delegation decides to meet the Prime Minister on the issue.

The Minister asserted that the six-member committee is working on the modalities.

Although such delegations were formed earlier as well, the meeting with the Prime Minister did not materialise, Choudhury said.

Prior to this, another AGP MLA, Ramendra Narayan Kalita raised a question on the status of the long-standing demand of the six communities.
