Ali Aye Ligang celebrated in UK with pomp, gaiety

GUWAHATI, Feb 19 - For the third consecutive year, national and international guests gathered to celebrate Ali Aye Ligang in the home of The Miris in London. Dr Jharna Kumbang (Miri), Dr Bashab Miri and their children Lorna and Liam welcomed Assamese and non-Assamese friends to an evening of culture and festivity. This was stated in a press release.

From the beginning, the festival was a sight to behold. Everyone in attendance embraced traditional Mising attire and authentic decorations hung from every corner.

Lorna Miri anchored the event, combining facts and humour to introduce each act and engage the audience in the evening�s programme.

The first segment was Manjira Goswami Chowdhury�s welcome address. As the president of Assam Sahitya Sabba, UK Chapter, she highlighted the wonderful history of Ali Aye Ligang and emphasised its continued importance on the Mising community today. She further thanked the Miri family for once again bringing people of all backgrounds together to raise awareness for the great the Assamese festival Ali Aye Ligang.

This was followed by the traditional Gumrag Lo Loley Soman, in which every single guest participated. Dr Jharna Kumbang (Miri) led the group, teaching her guests new dance moves, and everyone followed her with great enthusiasm.

The night continued with a mix of exciting performances. Tabla ustad Rishi Chowdhury once again impressed guests with his talents, Pangkhi Medhi performed a brilliant modern Mising dance. Juri Pegu Schmidt-Soltau delighted everyone with an impromptu Mising Oi-nitom and Jharna Kumbang once again impressed the audience with her Mising Kristhi and Oi-nitum sonam. The festivities rounded up with a lively fashion show and a final group dance, whereby everyone was given the opportunity to show off their dazzling outfits and admire the unique Mising weaving style.

Ali Aye Ligang ended with �Lilen,� the grand community feast. The range of mouth-watering dishes was greatly enjoyed by all. Celebrations continued after dinner also.

Everyone thanked Jharna, Bashab, Lorna and Liam for their hospitality and remarked that this was the best year of Ali Aye Ligang yet and they could not wait for further celebrations in the years to come, the release further added.
