Alarming rise in heart diseases in NE

By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, Nov 12 The rate of increase in heart disease is very high in south India as compared to the world and the North East is not far behind . Presently the number of deaths due to heart diseases is more than that of epidemics like malaria and cholera, said prominent cardiologist Dr Sasanka Baruah while participating in an awareness-cum-free check-up camp on heart diseases at Mangaldai recently.

Dr Baruah said that the treatment of heart diseases is very costly for the patients who belong to the economically poor sections in a State like Assam, so there should be a well-coordinated effort involving government organisations, media fraternity as well as the voluntary organisations to create awareness on prevention of heart diseases among the youth community right from the primary school level. He pointed out the habit of taking food containing oil, fats, mental stress, lack of physical exercises in our busy life-style in addtion to the habit of taking tobacco and other such substances are a few root causes of the alarming rise of heart diseases in this region.

Dr Baruah along with his fellow colleagues like Dr Arnab Paul and Dr Kishore Kumar from Hayat Heart Centre, Lalganesh, Guwahati treated about 150 patients coming from different areas of Darrang and Udalguri district free of cost in the day-long camp organised by the local voluntary organisation Crystal Vision at Santipur Girls ME School. Free ECG and blood sugar tests were also done at the camp.
