Alarming rise in crimes in State

GUWAHATI, March 23 � The State witnessed an alarmingly high incidence in different crimes during the past four years with the year 2014 alone recording 1,478 murders, 5,378 kidnappings, 2,047 rapes, 1,357 extortion cases, 12,198 theft cases, and 267 robbery cases.

This was revealed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rakibul Hussain while replying to a question from Phani Bhushan Choudhury (AGP) in the Assembly today.

The year-wise break-up of crimes since 2011 to 2013 is as follows: Year 2011 � 1,321 murders, 3,785 kidnappings, 1,707 rapes, 992 extortions, 8,350 thefts, and 310 robberies; 2012 � 1,368 murders, 3,812 kidnappings, 1,716 rapes, 1,074 extortions, 9,394 thefts, and 266 robberies; and 2013 � 1,383 murders, 4,831 kidnappings, 1,960 rapes, 1,214 extortions, 10,692 thefts, and 249 robberies.

During the four-year period, 310 civilians and 27 security personnel were killed in insurgency-related violence in the State. An amount of Rs 8.34 crore under the Central Scheme for Assistance to the Civilian Victims of Terrorist/Communal/Naxal Violence has so far been released as compensation to the families of 278 people killed in insurgency-related violence. Hussain added that as per the list available with the State Government, families of 113 people killed in this manner are yet to be compensated under the scheme.
