AKRSU(B) ST status

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Dec 31 - Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations of Assam has no right to oppose the ST status to the six indigenous communities, including Koch-Rajbongshi, it is the Government and the Registrar General of India who are only empowered to decide the demand, said Gokul Barman, General Secretary of Biswajit Ray-led AKRSU.

Barman also pointed his finger to Dr Samujjwal Bhattacharya, chief adviser of the AASU, for backing the move of the tribal organisations against the six communities and criticised him for being present in the convention organised in Guwahati recently by the tribal groups which had adopted resolution to fight legally against the ST status demanded by the six communities.

We do not interfere due rights of any community, so if somebody interferes our rights definitely it would create conflict between communities and for such unexpected situation tribal groups opposing ST status to the six communities would utterly responsible, Barman added.

Also if BJP-led Union Government does not grant ST status to six communities because of the opposing groups, we would wipe out the saffron party of the State in ensuing Assembly polls, Barman said.

The student body would fix its next steps against the ST opposing groups within the first week of January in New Year, Barman said.
