Akrsu stages protest

By CORRESPONDENT

BONGAIGAON, June 28 - All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union and its sister groups- All Koch Rajbongshi Mahila Samiti and Chilarai Sena- today organised a rally at Gandhi Maidan here in protest against non-fulfilment of its long-pending issues.

Leaders of the Koch Rajbongshi Community who were present in the rally expressed disappointment with the BJP-led government for its alleged inaction in solving their issues.

Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi, who was also present in the rally, said that the land and political rights of indigenous communities of Assam should be protected by any means.

If the government does not enlist the koch Rajbongsh people in the tribal list, the demand and relevance of Kamatapur state would gain the momentum, Gogoi warned.

He also demanded the government to grant ST status to these six communities, including Koch Rajbongshi as early as possible.

Dr Dwijendra Nath Bhakat, president of Koch Rajbongshi Sahitya Sabha, said that despite repeated pleas, Koch Rajbongshi community has been deprived of getting the tribal status which is unfortunate.

Former president of the student group, Biswajit Ray also criticised the Government for its silence over the issue.

Gokul Barman, general secretary of the student group, said, We have been launching a series of agitations, however, the government is still silent. If our demands are not met, we will launch a vigorous agitation.

Meanwhile, the AKRSU has announced a series of agitational programmes from July 9.
