MORIGAON/KOKRAJHAR, May 18 � The �Kamatapur bandh� called by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union (AKRSU), Biswajit Roy faction, which started this morning, evoked total response in Morigaon and Kokrajhar districts.
The bandh was called to highlight the AKRSU demand for a separate Kamatapur State and also for granting ST status to the Koch Rajbongshi community living in the State.
Normal life was paralyzed in Morigaon district where the bandh was of 12-hour duration, as shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicles stayed off the roads. However, ASTC buses were plying normally on the NH-37 with police escort. The Hindustan Paper Mill also functioned normally with CISF protection.
Bandh supporters blocked the Jagiroad Morigaon PWD road and also damaged several vehicles by pelting stones at them in the Manaha, Mikirbheta areas. Police arrested two persons at Baghjap near Jagiroad.
In Kokrajhar district, where the bandh was of 24-hour duration, all commercial and financial establishments remained closed. Vehicles were also off the roads. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the district till the filing of the report.
