Akhil sent to 14 days� judicial custody

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 6 - A local court in North Lakhimpur today sent Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi to fourteen days� judicial custody in connection with a case registered against him in 2011.

The KMSS leader, who was already in custody after being arrested on charges of instigating evicted settlers in Kaziranga, was arrested by Lakhimpur police in Nagaon where he was produced before a judicial magistrate. The KMSS leader was brought to North Lakhimpur last night and produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate here today.

A large number of KMSS supporters gathered outside the judicial complex and shouted anti-government slogans while Akhil was being produced at the CJM court. The CJM court sent the KMSS leader to fourteen days� judicial remand.

A case (No. 199/11) was registered against Akhil Gogoi at Bogeenadi Police Station of Lakhimpur district for disrupting the construction work of Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Power Project at Gerukamukh in 2011. Another case (No. GR 1739/2011) was also going on at the judicial court of North Lakhimpur under Sections 147, 148, 353, 336, 333, 307, 427 and 338 of CrPC. Akhil was accused of causing damage to public property, setting fire on vehicles, looting goods from carriage trucks and instigating public against the government.

Speaking briefly to the media en route to jail from the court, Akhil Gogoi said that his arrest for a case dating back to 2011 was nothing but a �conspiracy� by the present State Government.
