Akhil remanded to judicial custody

GUWAHATI, March 7 � After the expiry of the extended police custody, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity (KMSS) president Akhil Gogoi was today remanded to judicial custody by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), along with Debendra Nath Sharma and Ibrahim Ali, the other two accused.

The Court remanded the accused to judicial custody after rejecting the bail petition of all the three accused charged with abetting suicide and hatching criminal conspiracy.

Meanwhile, advocate Bijon Mahajan, counsel for the accused, told this reporter that the petitioners have moved the Gauhati High Court seeking bail. The matter is expected to come before the Court on Monday.

Earlier, Akhil Gogoi was �shown arrest� by the investigators in connection with case No. 2048/13 of the Dispur Police Station. Police, however, did not pray for any further extension of custody.

The Court, meanwhile, directed the authorities concerned that Akhil Gogoi be allowed to read books during a specified time and provided writing materials inside the Guwahati Central jail premises in accordance with Jail Manual and asked the superintendent of the jail to keep vigil.

The KMSS president and five others were arrested on March 2 in connection with Pranab Boro self-immolation case. Three other accused are still at large.

The next date of production of all the arrested accused has been fixed on March 19.
