Akhil held for fuelling protests near Kaziranga

GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was today picked up from Gandhibasti here and was later handed over to Jakhalabandha police in connection with a recent case of inciting protestors during an eviction drive against illegal settlers in and around the Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

Police was on the lookout for Gogoi after he allegedly incited protests while the personnel of the police and civil administration were carrying out eviction drive on the basis of a court order.

Two persons including a woman had died after the protestors entered into

confrontation with the police during the eviction drive which took place on September 19.

A case was registered by police against Akhil Gogoi under Sections 120, 120(B), 147, 148, 149, 307 and 435 of the IPC for fuelling the protest.

A team of Chandmari police today arrested him from the Gandhibasti office of the KMSS around 12:30 pm prior to which he had addressed the media.

A team of Chandmari police escorted him to Nagaon where he will be questioned. �The accused had fled the scene after the Kaziranga incident and we were looking for him,� police added.
