Akhil gets bail as NIA fails to file chargesheet

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 17 - More than three months after he was arrested, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi was today granted bail after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) failed to file the chargesheet within the statutory period of 90 days.

Gogoi was arrested on December 12 last year by the NIA and was subsequently booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The KMSS leader was arrested for abetting and inciting violence during the anti-CAA protests in the State in December last year. Following his arrest, his house and office were also raided by the NIA.

Although the investigators today sought additional time, the NIA Court rejected the plea.

Gogoi was allowed to go on bail against a bail amount of Rs 30,000 and a surety of the like amount.

However, Gogoi will continue to remain in jail since he is yet to get bail in connection with another case registered with the Guwahati Crime Branch.

Meanwhile, Sivasagar police too has secured the courts permission to arrest Gogoi in a case registered with Teok police station.
