Akhil begins indefinite fast

GUWAHATI, May 19 � Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) general secretary Akhil Gogoi today started his fast for an indefinite period in support of the demands for abandoning all the mega dam projects proposed in Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan.

The KMSS leader has also demanded immediate halt to transportation of construction materials to the under construction mega dam projects and resented the police atrocities on the anti-mega dam activists. Gogoi started his fast at 10 am today at the Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra in the Dighalipukhuripar area of the city.

Many people met Gogoi at the venue of his fast programme and expressed their solidarity with him. They included MP Bijoya Chakravorty, president of the State unit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Dhirendranath Adhikary, BJP MLA Ranjit Das, Asom Gana Parishad's (AGP's) Jagadish Bhuyan, Siang Bachao Federation's Jadik Tali, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad's Monoj Barua and Bhabesh Kakati, Matak Yuba Sanmilani president Nisheswar Saikia, All Assam Minority Students' Union president and secretary respectively Abdul Rahim Ahmed and Monowar Hussain, among others.

Besides, many students of the city colleges and Gauhati University met Gogoi at the venue of his fast, said a press release of the KMSS.
