GUWAHATI, July 16 - Jatin Goswami, one of the prominent exponents of Sattriya dance form, has been selected among the four eminent personalities of the country for the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellow, also known as the Akademi Ratna award.
Other prominent persons selected for this honour include tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, prominent danseuse Sonal Mansingh and Bharatnatyam exponent K Kalyanasundaram Pillai.
The fellowship of the Akademi is the most prestigious honour, which is restricted to 40 numbers at any given time. By the election of above four fellows, there are presently 40 Fellows of Sangeet Natak Akademi.���
The apex body of music, dance and drama also announced the names of the 44 artistes chosen for the Sangeet Natak Akademi awards for the year 2018. �
From Assam, Tankeswar Hazarika Borbayan has been selected for Sattriya in the category of dance. In the traditional/folk, tribal music/dance, theatre and puppetry category, Hem Chandra Goswami of Assam has been selected for the Akademi Award for his contributions in the category of mask making.
The honour of Akademi Fellow carries a purse money of Rs 3,00,000 and Akademi Award carries Rs 1,00,000 besides a tamrapatra and angavastram.
Dancer and choreographer Jatin Goswami is a prominent name in the field of Sattriya � one of the classical dance forms of the country. The founder director of Sattriya Academy, Guwahati, Goswami was conferred the fourth highest civilian honour Padma Shri in 2008, for his contributions to Sattriya dance.
Governor Professor Jagdish Mukhi has extended his best wishes to Sangeet Natak Akademi awardees on being chosen for the prestigious awards. The Governor congratulated eminent classical dancer Jatin Goswami, for being selected as an Akademi Ratna. Professor Mukhi also conveyed his best wishes to Tankeswar Hazarika Borbayan and Hem Chandra Goswami for their Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2018.
