AJYCP to continue with anti-dam agitation

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 30 - Asserting that the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) would continue its protest against the construction of big dams till a report from an impartial expert committee and go-ahead from the Green Tribunal is received, the youth body today slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for breaking its pre-poll promise made to the people of Assam.

The AJYCP also strongly criticised the State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass for his statement regarding the protesting organisations consent on restarting the construction work at the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project (LSHEP) site.

We have never given our consent on restarting the work and we would maintain this stand till an impartial expert committee assesses the downstream impact of the project and the work is done as per the parameters of the Green Tribunal. Under such circumstances, such misleading comments expose the intentions of those in power, AJYCP president Putul Dutta and general secretary Palash Changmai said today.

The AJYCP also dared the State government to constitute an impartial expert committee and make its recommendations public.

The BJP came to power supporting the anti-big dam movement of the people of Assam. However, it entered into a secret understanding with the NHPC and restarted the construction work at the project site, taking a total U-turn over the issue. We strongly condemn this hypocritical policy of the ruling party and assert that our movement would grow stronger in the days to come, the AJYCP leaders said.

They further stated that the youth body has always supported alternative means of power generation through small hydel projects, instead of big dams.

We wont budge from our previous stand over the issue of Lower Subansiri project, till the safety of the people living downstream is ensured by all means, it further mentioned.
