AJYCP Statewide stir against NHPC move

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 10 - Protesting against NHPCs fresh moves to restart the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electricity Project and other big dam projects taken up in the north-eastern region, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) today staged a three-hour demonstration in all district headquarters of the State.

The youth body, which has been continuously protesting the big dams in the region in view of the possible threat to the downstream people as well as ecological balance, today alleged that emboldened by the Union governments patronage, the NHPC is not just violating the tripartite agreement between the anti-dam organizations, the Centre and the State government, but also disobeying the National Green Tribunal order.

It is a matter of great concern that our Central and the State governments are extending their support to the NHPC project, totally ignoring the dangerous impact on the lives and property of the downstream people of Assam. At a time when devastation caused by smaller projects like Ranganadi and Doyang have wreaked havoc on the people of Assam, the impact of 2000 MW Lower Subansiri project is beyond comprehension, AJYCP president Rana Pratap Barua said.

We warn the NHPC authorities not to move ahead with its plan on constructing the LSHEP. At the same time, we also protest all the mega dam projects in the entire north-eastern region, which would be more devastating than useful for the people of this part of the country. We also ask the State and the Central government not to back this anti-people project, Palash Changmai, general secretary of the Parishad, stated.

The youth body would further take up a Statewide protest programme over the issue in the coming days.
