AJYCP stages stir against CAA, EIA across State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 3 - In protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and demanding Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Assam, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) today staged dharna in front of all district and subdivisional headquarters throughout the State.

A memorandum containing its demands was sent to the Prime Minister after the protests.

Asserting that the future of the indigenous people cannot be secured unless the system of ILP is implemented in Assam in the line of a number of other states of the Northeast, the AJYCP stressed that ILP was the only effective solution to save Assam from external aggression and unrestrained internal migration.

Protesting against the CAA, it stated that the Citizenship Amendment Bill had witnessed a huge protest throughout the State. However, sidelining all the public resentment, the Union government moved ahead with its plan to get the bill passed in the Parliament as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The legislation is totally against the will of the people of Assam and we would continue our fight against it till the contentious legislation is rolled back or Assam is excluded from its purview, said AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai.

On the other hand, the EIA is one such move that would cause an irreparable damage to our biodiversity. A number of organizations and experts have expressed their concern over the matter. However, the Union government seems to have adopted an adamant approach over the matter, he stated.
