SILAPATHAR, Feb 21 The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) staged a protest against the slow construction of the Bogibeel bridge at Bogibeel-Karengghat on Thursday, 25 km from here. The youth body expressed grave concern over the non-completion of the Bogibeel Railway Project, which was started in 1999 by the Central Government. The Dhemaji AJCYP unit staged the protest by burning the effigy of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the middle of the construction site at Bogibeel.

The protesters, led by AJYCP district president Ratul Borgohain, went to the construction site in the middle of the Brahmaputra river. The AJYCP activists also shouted slogans against the State and Central governments for their lackadaisical attitude towards the completion of the Bogibeel Railway Project.

Later, Borgohain said that the slow construction was indicative of the negligence towards Northeast India. The contractors Gammon India Limited are yet to complete the construction of all 42 posts of the bridge since the commencement of work. The construction of as many as 12 posts in the middle section of the bridge are yet ro start, he added. Borgohain criticised Lakhimpur MP and Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Ranee Narah for her negligent attitude in the Parliament over the bridge.

According to the Gammon India Limited, 90 per cent work on the posts of the bridge has been completed and the remaining work will be over by this year. The superstructure of the bridge will be laid by the Hindustan Construction Limited.
