GUWAHATI, Sept 26 - The Paschim Guwahati Anchalik Committee of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today organised a protest at Boragaon here against the failure of the government to mitigate the artificial flood problem in the city.
Nearly 35 members of the Parishad gathered near the Boragaon LP School at noon today and started shouting slogans against the government and the authority concerned for their utter negligence towards solving one of the prime issues dogging the city.
The BJP-led government had promised the citizens of Guwahati before coming to power that it would resolve the artificial flood problem but it has utterly failed. Moreover, many new areas in the city have been witnessing artificial flood, said Paschim Guwahati Anchalik Committee president Kuldip Baruah.
Due to the artificial flood, the conditions of several roads in the city have become pathetic. One such road is Maligaon, Goshala and Boragaon connecting road which is known as one of the busiest roads in the city. The condition of the road becomes pitiable following a shower. The almost entire stretch of the road is replete with huge potholes. Moreover, no work has been done in the last ten years for the improvement of the road, he added.
The government agencies had claimed that they had spent around Rs 19 crore each in the past two years for desiltation of the city drains. The state government has undertaken several measures under the Mission Flood Free Guwahati to mitigate the intensity of artificial flood. The various schemes include cleaning and desiltation of the Pamohi water channel, Borsola Beel, Silsako Beel, Bondajan Beel, Deepor Beel and the NBCC drain.
After allocation of crores of rupees for mitigating artificial flood and improvement of the city roads, GDD Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya and PWD officials have not undertaken any development work to ease the sufferings of the city residents. We urge the government to solve the artificial flood problem immediately, Baruah alleged.
