AJYCP, CPI-M protest MoA on big dam

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 24 - Reacting strongly to the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between the State government and NHPC for implementation of the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Electricity Project, the AJYCP today said it will not affect the anti-big dam movement carried out by it. From August 26 next, we will start our protest activities more vigorously, said AJYCP leaders Rana Pratap Barua and Palash Changmai.

It is very unfortunate that Sarbananda Sonowal-led State government, which came to power with the promise of protecting the people, their land and habitat, has signed the MoA unilaterally and secretly. This step has pushed the downstream people into a death trap, they said. They also criticised the BJP for taking a U-turn on the issue of big dams after assuming power at the Centre and in the State.

CPI-M reaction: The State Committee of the CPI-M while vehemently opposing the MoA, said the people of the State have been expressing serious concern over the mega dam hydel projects proposed in Arunachal Pradesh, fearing their adverse downstream impacts. Until and unless the safety to the lives and properties of the downstream people are ensured, these mega dam hydel projects should not be implemented, it said.
