AJYCP cadres gherao Moni Mahanta; Sankardev Sangha reiterates anti-CAB stand

NAGAON, Dec 8 - Massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill by the AASU, AJYCP and other organisations continued in the district today also.

The Nagaon district committee of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) today too took out a massive bike rally from its district head office, situated at Natun Bazaar. It went upto Rupahihat weekly bazaar where hundreds of protesters gheraoed AGP leader Moni Madhav Mahanta and confined him for many hours when he was attending a party meeting being held at Rupahihat.

Angry protesters went on a rampage and created a ruckus there shouting anti-CAB slogans and subjected him to intense questioning about the CAB and also his party�s stand against it. When Mahanta assured the agitators that he will send the entire feedback to the party leadership immediately, the protesters released him.

Subsequently, the agitators turned back to its district office and traversed towards Uriagaon bypass Chariali where they ended their protest.

During the rally, hundreds of protesters shouted various slogans against government�s bid to table the bill on the floor of Parliament and also strongly criticised both the governments at the Centre as well as in the State. The protesters however warned that they would not accept the bill in the State at any cost as it would demolish the basic identity of the indigenous people.

Meanwhile, the Srimanta Sankardev Sangha, the largest socio-religious organisation of the North-east also cleared its anti-CAB stand. A press release signed by Babul Bora, the secretary general of the organisation today stated that Srimanta Sankardev Sangha had earlier cleared its anti-CAB stand and had already given its submission in writing before the high-level joint parliamentary committee and it was still maintaining the same. The Sangha stated that it will not accept anything which would harm Assam and North-east.
