GUWAHATI, Dec 3 - The state convention of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) will be held on December 16 and 17 at Sivasagar and through the convention, the party will manifest itself as a full-fledged political entity. The core committee of the regional party will be declared on December 16 and its first executive meeting will be held on December 17.
With a strength of 12 lakh members at present, the AJP plans to accelerate its membership drive to cross the mark of 40 lakh ahead of the ensuing state elections. Both online and offline membership drives would be stepped up once the core committee of the party is formed, informed the AJP conveners here today.
Addressing the media today, AJP chief convener Dr Krishna Gopal Bhattacharyya said the constitution of the party would also be accepted during the political convention.
The party, on the other hand, strongly criticised the move to privatise APDCL. Privatising Assams power distribution system and handing it over to Adani cannot be accepted at any cost. Its obvious now that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government is running a parallel economy under the patronage of big corporates like Ambani and Adani. However, no such nexus will be allowed to jeopardise the interest of the people of Assam. Once APDCL goes into private hands, the power tariff will go beyond the reach of the common people, party coordinator Jagdish Bhuyan stated.
On the other hand, several leaders from other political parties, including former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) central body secretary and a powerful leader from Khumtai Paban Saikia and former state president of NPPs youth wing Asim Malla Bujarbaruah, joined the AJP today.
On the other hand, Assamese actress Maitrei Priyadarshini Sarma, singer Archana Kaushik, Shikha Bora, poetess Kakoli Bordoloi and some leading women from various spheres of life joined the regional party.
A 126-member convener committee to form Jatiya Mahila Shakti, a sister concern of the AJP, was also formed today at Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir.
