Ajmal�s assets increased by over 80pc since 2014

GUWAHATI, April 19 - With assets of Rs 78.80 crore, sitting Lok Sabha MP from Dhubri Badruddin Ajmal�s is by far the richest candidate from Assam in this Lok Sabha election and in the last five years his assets have nearly doubled.

In the 2014 elections, the AIUDF president�s assets were valued at Rs 43.27 crore, which is Rs 12.92 crore more than what he had in the previous elections. In the 2017-18 IT return he filed, Ajmal�s annual income that year was Rs 4.29 crore. In the preceding four years, his annual income was Rs 4.29 crore (2016-17), Rs 1.99 crore (2015-16), Rs 1.95 crore (2014-15) and Rs 2.66 crore (2013-14), according to the IT returns filed.

The perfume baron stated in his affidavit that his income sources were �business, bank interest, remuneration from partnership firm, MP salary, gains on sale of property, profit from partnership firms, etc�.

On the other hand, the value of assets of Congress MP from Autonomous District Biren Sing Engti has dropped drastically since 2014. According to his 2014 election affidavit, Engti had assets of Rs 3.53 crore, which has come down to Rs 78.66 lakh, if one goes by his affidavit filed in this elections.

The assets of other sitting MPs have increased.

Silchar MP Sushmita Dev�s assets went up from Rs 8.74 crore in 2014 to Rs 10.67 crore in 2019, while Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi has become richer, from Rs 54 lakh in 2014 to Rs 1.37 crore.

Similarly, assets of Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli went up from Rs 9 lakh to Rs 43 lakh. AIUDF MP Radheshyam Biswas also entered the crorepati club, as his assets increased from Rs 70 lakh in 2014 to Rs 1.21 crore. Kokrajhar MP Naba Sarania had Rs 21-lakh assets in 2014, which increased to Rs 81 lakh in the last five years.

The assets of Pradan Baruah, who won in the 2016 bypolls from Lakhimpur, also increased to Rs 1.43 crore from Rs 69 lakh. He also has liabilities of Rs 58 lakh.

Barring Ajmal, most of the sitting MPs have stated that their only source of income is the MP salary and allowances.

Sushmita Dev is also a lawyer by profession and Gaurav Gogoi�s wife is a senior consultant at OPM India Pvt Limited from where she gets a salary. Radheshyam Biswas is also a cultivator, according to his affidavit.
