Ajmal asks Cong not to contest in Lower Assam

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 23 - The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) today called upon the Congress not to put up candidates in Lower Assam constituencies where the Badruddin Ajmal-led party is strong for the sake of putting up a united effort to defeat the BJP.

AIUDF president and Lok Sabha MP Badruddin Ajmal said that his party does not want to see the BJP in power in Dispur under any circumstances.

For the sake of defeating the BJP, we have decided not to contest in 66 constituencies in Upper Assam, which we have left for the Congress. In return, Congress should also leave seats for us in Lower Assam, where our party is strong, he said.

Ajmal said that as a Bihar-style Grand Alliance did not become a reality in Assam, all anti-BJP parties must come closer and adopt an anti-BJP stand.
