Ajit Chaliha passes away

DIBRUGARH, March 31 - Ajit Chaliha, third generation tea planter, politician and a social worker, passed away yesterday at around 10:50 pm at a private nursing home here.

He had walked up to a nearby nursing home following reported respiratory problem last night.

Chaliha, a partner of Banamalie Tea Estate had also served as Assistant Engineer with ASEB from 1962 to 1964. As a young engineer, he was associated with the construction work on the Barapani dam near Shillong. He was also an active politician for about half a century. He was the first president of Dibrugarh District Congress (I) from 1978 to 1984. He had twice contested unsuccessfully as BJP MP candidate for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency in 1998 and 1999, and as BJP MLA candidate for Dibrugarh LAC in 2001. He was once elected as the Dibrugarh Municipal Ward Commissioner. He was also the president of Dibrugarh Nagarik Sangha and member of the governing body of RKB Law College for several years.

Born on March 13, 1937, he underwent schooling at St Edmunds in Shillong and subsequently.graduated in Science from Cotton College, Guwahati. He passed Mechanical Engineering from Assam Engineering College.

While Chaliha�s death was widely mourned, his last rites will be performed on Sunday at the Chowkidinghee funeral ground.The funeral procession will commence at 11 am.
