GUWAHATI, April 1 - Senior Congress leader Dr Jairam Ramesh today alleged that the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is propagating fake secularism in the garb of being a secular front and has already entered into a secret understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the poll.
He also charged both the BJP and the AIUDF of orchestrating acts of communal polarisation behind the curtains to come to power.
Talking to media-persons at the Congress party headquarters here, the former Union Minister said that the ensuing polls in Assam will be a historic one and exuded confidence that the Congress will retain power at Dispur riding on issues of development and social harmony.
Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dr Ramesh said that the full form of Modi stands for Murder Of Democratic India.
Although the AIUDF and the BJP have joined hands to defeat Congress, they would fail to yield any positive results. In this election, the straight fight is between the Congress and the RSS, which is in possession of the remote control for the BJP, Dr Ramesh said.
Dr Ramesh further said, Modi speaks about his love for Assam tea. If he really loves Assam tea, why has he not appointed the Chairman of Tea Board for the last 14 months?
He also asked Modi, national BJP president Amit Shah and BJPs chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal to make public their stand on big dams and the Lower Subansiri hydel project.
He added that if the BJP comes to power, the government will be run not from Dispur, but from Delhi or Nagpur. Dont try to make Assam the next Gujarat, the senior Congressman said while referring to the BJP leadership.
Dr Ramesh said that the face of Assam has changed in the last 15 years. Only those who had not seen what the situation was like in the State in 2001 would say that there has been no development in the last 15 years. Peace and development have returned in Assam under Tarun Gogoi. It would be a wild exaggeration if somebody says no development has taken place in Assam in the last 15 years, he added. He said, Peace, development and social harmony will continue to be our priority in days to come.
Asked if the trail of dissident activities is going to make it tough for the Congress this time, Dr Ramesh said, Congress party is like the mighty Brahmaputra. There might be turbulence here and there, but the river would continue to flow in tandem with its tributaries.
