By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 7 - Assam Police on Tuesday arrested AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam on charges of making 'controversial and misleading' comments on COVID-19 quarantine centres and those kept there, as part of the measures taken by the Health department in the wake of the outbreak of the pandemic.

A audio clip purportedly belonging to the legislator from Nagaon's Dhing constituency has also become viral wherein Islam is heard saying that the centres are worse than the detention centres meant for the illegal foreigners.

He had apparently also questioned the Government 's intent when it came to containing the spread of coronavirus.

Sources informed that Islam was questioned for many hours on Monday night and subsequently arrested on Tuesday morning.

"His comments seem to have the potential of disturbing communal harmony. We are also analysing the audio clip," police said.

Sources said that the Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly has been informed about the development.

So far, 27 persons have been tested positive for COVID-19 in the State.
