HAILAKANDI, May 19 - All the three Assembly seats of Hailakandi district were won by the AIUDF. The major setback of Hailakandi Congress is the defeat of six-time MLA and Minister Gautam Roy from Katlicherra constituency. His son Rahul Roy was also defeated in Algapur by the AIUDF and he has been placed third.

In Katlicherra LAC, AIUDF candidate Sujam Uddin Laskar defeated Congress candidate Gautam Roy by a margin of 15,090 votes. Sujam got 50,674 votes, while Gautam Roy got 35,584 votes. BJP candidate Rajkumar Das got 32,164 votes.

In Algapur LAC, AIUDF candidate Nijam Uddin Choudhury defeated BJP candidate Kaushik Rai by a margin of 17,741 votes. Nijam got 50,526 votes, while Kaushik got 32,785. Congress candidate Rahul Roy got 25,925 votes and was placed third. AGP candidate Mehnaz Choudhury got 5,822 votes.

In Hailakandi LAC, AIUDF candidate Anwar Hussain Laskar defeated BJP candidate Saumyajit Dutta Choudhury by a margin of 2,585 votes. Anwar got 41,462 votes, while Saumyajit got 38,877 votes. Independent candidate Zakir Hussain Laskar got 15,573 votes and was placed third. Congress candidate Anam Uddin Laskar placed fourth in this seat and he got 9,222.

After losing the poll, heavyweight Congress candidate, Gautam Roy, admitted that the peoples anger worked behind his defeat and his maximum votes went in favour of BJP, he added. He pledged to serve the people of Katlicherra though they voted against him. He admitted that the exit of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is one of the major reasons of partys debacle.

A BJP worker in Hailakandi commented that the polarisation of Hindu-Muslim votes is the main reason of AIUDFs success in all the three seats of Hailakandi district.

All the three winning AIUDF candidates commented that they will work for the development of the poor and marginalised people of Hailakandi district. The development of surface communication is also in their priority list, they added.
