GUWAHATI, July 6 � At a time when Congress and some other organizations have called for inclusion of voters� list as a supporting document for the NRC update process, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has said it wants the process to continue as per the Supreme Court guidelines and wants other outfits to refrain from creating hurdles in the path of the ongoing process.
�The apex court has already set the guidelines for update of NRC after receiving feedback from various stakeholders. We believe that a correct NRC, which will remove the names of all illegal immigrants, should be prepared following the Supreme Court guidelines. After all, various political parties and other organizations had arrived at a common formula for the preparation of the NRC. So let the process continue as per rules framed by the apex court,� said a senior AIUDF leader to The Assam Tribune.
Leaders of the Badruddin Ajmal-led party said that if the State government, the Congress or any other organization or individual has any issues, then they should approach the Supreme Court.
�Merely making public statements will only create confusion and worsen the situation. It shows lack of good intentions,� said a party office-bearer.
Accusing Congress and BJP of pandering to �vote bank politics�, AIUDF leaders said that instead of public posturing the State government and political parties should come out to help the people participate in the process.
�The State government should make necessary documents available to the people. The political parties can create awareness among the masses, as our party and its youth and student wings are doing,� said an AIUDF leader.
Asked about hurdles faced by minority community members, who form AIUDF�s major support base, in submitting supporting documents along with the NRC forms, he said, �There is no panic among minorities who are genuine citizens. You visit any minority dominated area and you will find that the most enthusiastic response to the NRC update process is in such areas. Even people in places like South Salmara, who have lost even their land and houses to erosion, have always taken care to preserve their official documents and papers.�
He added, �Like other genuine citizens, minorities also want a foolproof NRC to be prepared so that the long debate about illegal immigrants can be settled once and for all. As for our support base among minorities, it is more consolidated than ever and we are now seeking to expand our base among other communities as well.�
