GUWAHATI, June 13 � The Assam State Committee of the All India Trade Union Congress(AITUC) has expressed its deep condolences at the sudden demise of reputed artist Khagen Mahanta on Thursday. This was stated in a press release.

In a general meeting held here at its State head office, the general secretary of the union, Munin Mahanta threw light on the artist�s life and his contributions to the society, especially his contributions in the cultural sphere. The meet, which was presided over by the president of the body, Upen Talukdar also observed a minute�s silence, praying for eternal peace of the departed soul.

The union has also postponed its agitational programme on the issue of waste disposal of the city being entrusted to private parties and to appoint the workers of the Guwahati Waste Management Company into the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. This programme will now be held on June 17.
