AISF jawan killed, 3 held

SILCHAR, March 28 - A jawan of the Assam Industrial Security Force (AISF) died over an alleged tiff at Sonabarighat area of Cachar district on Saturday, amid the countrywide lockdown to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Police said the deceased has been identified as Baktar Uddin Barbhuiya (50), a resident of South Krishnapur village. The incident took place around 8.30 am when the jawan was heading home from his workstation at Binnakendi Tea Estate. An argument between the jawan and locals led to a tussle, leaving the former grievously injured. Doctors at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital declared him brought dead.

Cachar SP Manabendra Dev Ray rushed to the spot with a large police force and dispersed the crowd. Talking to the media, the SP said investigation into the incident was in progress and three persons � Ahib Boktar Majumder alias Afzal, Shamim Hussain Choudhury and Hamida Begam, all residents of Sonabarighat � have been apprehended.

Meanwhile, a youth reportedly drowned in the Barak river, and SDRF personnel were searching for him.
