Air gun use banned in Tamenglong

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Nov 9 - The use of air gun has been strictly prohibited in Tamenglong district in a bid to protect migratory birds, particularly the Amur falcon.

Amur falcons arrive in Tamenglong district in large numbers during winter every year in search of food and adaptable habitation.

Also known as Akhoipuina in the Rongmei dialect, these pigeon-sized birds fly from Siberia and northern China to Wokha (Nagaland) and then Tamenglong (Manipur) before flying back to their original habitat after touching central and western India and South Africa.

Deputy Commissioner Ravinder Singh issued a public notice on Thursday following the State Forest Departments initiative to study the migratory route of Amur falcons. The initiative has been taken to check hunting of Amur falcons.

Meanwhile, a team of scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India and abroad has tagged satellite radios to two Amur falcons and named them Tamenglong and Manipur. Tamenglong is roosting in Chiuluan village near the Barak river, while Manipur is roosting along the Irang river near Gwangram, Puching, Rangkhung and Taobam.

The Rainforest Club, Tamenglong, in association with the State Forest Department, has been organising Amur falcon festivals since 2015 in a move to conserve the threatened bird. This year, too, the festival was held at Tamenglong town. Forest Minister Th Shyamkumar inaugurated an information and interpretation centre, besides opening watchtowers at Phalong (Bhalok) village in Tamenglong.
